Vintage software for IBM PC/PCjr. Collectible software that has not been tested along with a map and users guide, but without the book or box. The game clearly states that it is for IBM PC/PCjr and may not run on compatibles. The Hobbit is an illustrated text adventure single player computer game released in 1982 and based on the book The Hobbit, by JRR Tolkien. It was developed at Beam Software by Philip Mitchell and Dr Veronika Megler and published by Melbourne House.

It was later converted to most home computers. This is Version 1.1.

The game was groundbreaking in several aspects. The Hobbit is a text-adventure and featured a sophisticated language recognition system which permitted players to type advanced sentences, allowing for a greater degree of interaction with the game. The Hobbit also featured non-player characters that moved independently of the player, their actions dictated by unique personalities and strengths. These characters gave the game a level of unpredictability which was unique in adventure games of the time. The user guide is also of interest.
